A little about me:

While serving on a Board of Directors for a Senior Retirement Community, I met many wonderful people who were living on a survivor’s Social Security Benefit. They followed well-intentioned, but poor advice. As a result, their retirement pensions disappeared, healthcare benefits were lost, and homes and personal property had to be sold! Some of the residents of the retirement community were surviving on less than $1000 a month!

Their stories became very personal to me a few years later. My Dad served on our city’s police force for 37 years. He paid into the retirement fund for city employees and his union. When he decided to retire his badge, remembering the folks who lost their savings, I suggested he take his retirement pension in a lump sum distribution and place his money in a personal account that he could manage.

The Chief of Police advised my Dad otherwise. My Dad left his savings with the city. My Dad passed shortly after receiving his first, and only, pension check. My Mom had predeceased my Dad. All their children were legal adults. There were no qualifying beneficiaries.

POOF! His retirement savings were gone!
